As is the case
in 2008 in the UK, Spain will start switching off the Analogue TV transmitters
in 3 Phases, the first Phase beginning in June 2009. After that time the only
way to receive Spanish TV channels, will be with a Digital
Video Broadcast TV
System. You will need A TV Antenna capable of receiving the frequencies (channels)
that the Digital transmissions are being sent out on. You will also need a TV
which has a built-in DVB (TDT) Receiver, or if your TV does not have a a built-in
DVB (TDT) receiver, then you will need a separate DVB (TDT) receiver box (available
from Carrefour/Eroski/Alcampo/Miro for about 30€-40€). The external
DVB (TDT) receiver box, will plug into your TV via the SCART connector, like
any other external device (so does not matter whether it is a UK or Spanish
TV). Your TV antenna, will then plug into this external DVB receiver. Once installed
you will be able to receive some 25+ Spanish Digital Terrestrial TV channels.
Quite often if the program being viewed, originally had an English soundtrack,
they will transmit the original soundtrack in tandem with the Spanish dubbed
soundtrack. You only need to press the "Audio" button on your TDT
remote control, and select the other Audio channel, to change the audio from
Spanish to English. Please note that DVB/TDT boxes from the UK, will not work
in Spain.
Beware
tradesman telling you that you will require a New Digital Antenna
This is not always the case, your existing Antenna may work just fine
We recommend you have a site test/survey done
first, of your existing Antenna by a competent engineer, with the correct test
equipment for TDT reception, not just a TDT receiver, and the "see if it
works" method.
